Description

Watercolor, ink and Gesso on 425 gsm paper 30×22 inches
I like that little plant. First because it grows everywhere regardless of the soil and spreads very easily, then because it is very nourishing and medicinal and finally for the shape of its seeds. I find it a good symbol for the 'Age of aquarius' spirit. (silly hippy me :P)

This is so beautiful, and your technique is so flawless, that I'm having trouble even describing what I like about it!

Like, trying to talk about your watercolor technique is as hard as if someone out of the blue asked me what the sun looked like. "It's ... very bright," I might say, in the same way I say now that your painting is very good.

Composition-wise, your choice to have the plant lying in the center with the cracks in the rock radiating outwards is a good one. I also really like the subtle color gradient from the lighter, brighter blues at the top to the darker blues and blacks of the bottom. It draws the eye down the stalk of the plant.

Those inky washes near the bottom create a really interesting texture, they give the impression of rougher surfaces casting shadows.

And HOW did you get that grainy texture in the rock? Did you salt the paper or something? However you did it, it works wonderfully to create the impression of roughness on your rocks. Like if the inky washes do well at imitating how shadows would look on cracked, flat rocks, those tiny points of white do a great job of showing what the light would do.

The only gripe I have is that, having Googled Capsella rubella, I see that it does not look quite like you have it here. The distance between the main stalk and the heart-shaped leaves should be greater.
